burst parameters and resulting spectra

August 20, 2020

lots of EEG studies are looking at changes in oscillatory alpha-power. but different types of time domain changes can manifest as changes in alpha-power. for instance, de-/increases in:
- duration or
- number or
- amplitude of oscillatory bursts. pic.twitter.com/voHmOvac9e

oscillation baseline shift and 1/f-exponents

ok, imagine you have an oscillation that is not symmetric around 0 (small direct current shift) with some amplitude modulation, for instance with 1/f-dynamics. ➡️ then these 1/f-dynamics will show up in low frequency part of spectrum (red); in addition to around oscillation peak (yellow).

beta as bursts / beta as a rhythm

June 06, 2024

"beta-activity as bursts", I am def 💯 OK with that.

but imho the pendulum has swung too far in the direction that all beta activity equals close to 1-2 cycle bursts. so just to illustrate diversity, here is some more sustained beta-activity, resting-state EEG.
