Fourier Transform: transform time-domain signals into the spectral domain, easy. but why use only these two domains?

imagine the regular Fourier transform as a 90° rotation in time-frequency plane, so fractional Fourier transform let's you rotate all around.
could be used to reduce frequency-varying noise.
